Set on the site of a former orphanage — once inhabited by our now mid-30s protagonist Laura, her husband and seven year-old son — The Orphanage is a uniquely European ghost story. Laura's fondest memories were of her time at the Orphanage before adoption and she's returned to live on the site and host a sanctuary for a small group of special needs children. Her son, Simon, has HIV and an overactive imagination, playing treasure-hunting games with six friends who don't exist.
But when he goes missing, Laura is convinced there's something darker going on. Something remains in the building and Laura soon realizes that she must deal with it before she'll see her son again.
So why does The Orphanage work so well? Scary children, one with imaginary friends, in a creepy house, it's been done before a hundred times. It's been remade by Hollywood just as many. Quite simply, it works because, unlike most psychological horror movies, it understands that its protagonist is not simply a victim — she's a character.
